HOW TO MAKE PROPHETIC ART

#2: PRACTICAL

As I put my hand to paper

As I let my muscles move
As I breathe in for the first notes
Or take my favorite tool

Will You meet me in this process

And show me what to do

Meeting You is all I want
I'm really here for You

Every style = good

Art exists in many forms and styles and prophetic art isn't any different. Whether you want to sew, forge, paint, sculpt, sing, doodle, wave a banner, play an instrument or dance: it's all good.

On From the Mere I want to focus on several art forms that are easily accessible for people from all ages, budgets, experience and skill levels. However please feel free to apply the same principals to your type of art, if you are familiar with a more technical art form.

In this section you will find technical tips & tricks for several art forms, including specific tips & tricks about including God in the process. Hopefully these are helpful & inspiring!

Collaging

Collaging is one of my personal favorites when it comes to making prophetic art.
If you are new to prophetic art, I would highly recommend starting with collaging, for 3 reasons:

  • It's easily accessible. It's suitable for all ages, skill levels and pretty much anyone's budget. You can test the waters of prophetic art with whatever you have lying around the house.

  • You're using pre-made materials. Collaging is about finding and combining clippings from magazines/books/etc. Unlike most other types of art, the pictures and phrases have already been created for you, all you need to do is ask God to point out the ones He wants to use. Prophetically speaking it's much more relaxed.

  • Since most people feel a lot less pressure when it comes to collaging as opposed to most other art-forms, it's relaxing and fun. Even as a group activity.

Painting & Mixed media

There is so much beauty in painting and it's awesome for creating prophetic art. And it's actually not even that difficult.

Since there are so many variations in styles, techniques, and combinations, there are unnumerable options. You can capture dreams or visions God gave you in detailed compositions, find a childlike freedom by fingerpainting, communicate your heart to the Lord when you have no words, cry out to Him in a painted prayer or get adventurous by letting Him lead you from start to finish. Whatever you do: it's a great place to meet with God.

A great benefit of painting is that it's typically one of the slower art-forms. This is giving you more time to connect with God about the message and really let it sink in deeply. In my experience the revelation usually feels more grounded in your heart than with faster art types like music and dance.

Painting requires you to invest a little more time, efford and money than most art types discussed on From the Mere. If you are interested though, it will be worth it.

DANCE

Who says you need to be a good dancer before you can dance?

Dancing with the Lord, or even simply moving, is incredibly powerful. I would literally recommend it to everybody.

Dancing has this wonderful way of (re)connecting your body, soul, and spirit. It sets you free from expectations and releases all kinds of healthy brain chemistry. Holy Spirit tells me to dance daily, even if it's just for a little bit.

Just like all art forms: it's healthy for everyone, but much more powerful when done with Holy Spirit. You don't need to be good at it, whether you do it secretly in your bedroom or on a stage: pick your favorite music and let's go!

SINGING & MAKING

MUSIc

King David is the greatest Biblical example of making prophetic art as part of our normal life. Though His day-job and clearest ministry assignment was that of a King, he never lost track of the power of his creativity. He used his music to pour his heart out to the Lord, to testify of the great things God did for him and also clearly prophesied things like Jesus' death. We also know that David's music silenced the inner turmoil of Saul.

Through David, God shows us how powerful creativity and music is in the kingdom of God. So let's follow that example!

Again: there's no rule about how good you need to be before you are allowed to sing or make music for God. Singing worship songs in the shower can be more powerful than leading worship on stage. And a simple repeated one-line-melody can connect you with God more than a brilliantly written song.
